BACKGROUND:

Avian influenza (H5N1) is expected to arrive in the United States probably this year. An influenza pandemic may emerge from this bird flu at any time. We all share a responsibility for emergency preparedness and individuals, communities, private industry and all levels of government need to actively prepare. President Bush charged DHHS Secretary Leavitt with bringing together state and local public health officials from across the nation to discuss their plans for a pandemic and to help them improve pandemic planning at the community level. Leavitt and other top federal officials are attending planning summits in every state. The official U.S. Web site for pandemic influenza is www.pandemicflu.gov. Information about California's summit is at www.dhs.ca.gov/home/PanFluSummit. Contact: Laura McCasland, 916/875-5881.
